Throughout the thesis I have worked with data from a strawberry leaf and a breast sample from an American woman, with a cancer inflammation. Furthermore, I have received images made from a SAXS measurement in 2008 of the same sample. I will use the images of the leaf in the theory as illustrations and examples, while I will discuss the breast results obtained at ESRF and compare their quality with the results from cSAXS.

Kort Resume Breast cancer is one of the cancer types which are diagnosed the most. 10 % of women in Denmark will get cancer before they turn 75, and 25 % of those women will have breast cancer. Denmark has the biggest occurence of breast cancer since 2 % die of breast cancer every year. On top of that we recently found out that, that number is not decreasing. At the beginning of February 2010 it was discovered, that mammography screenings at the hospitals did not have any effect on the number of occurrences of breast cancer. Instead they lead to unnecessary radiation, surgeries and worries for the women in question . If there is a suspicion of breast cancer the only way of knowing for sure, is to take the inflammation out, the transmission images are simply not good enough for determining cancer. Therefore there is a big need for new imaging methods good enough for cancer diagnostics. This is where the directional dark field imaging comes in. Cancer tumors experience random orientations of their fibers, which can be revealed by directional dark field imaging, through the theory of scattering. By investigating the fibrous orientations within the breast, a cancer tumor can be identified and treatments or surgery can start immediately. An early diagnosis of cancer has an immense influence on the probability of getting cured.
